Mental Health Support From Holding Space

Supporting families struggling with anxiety and stress during Covid-19

Working with Eastbourne-based community mental health charity Holding Space and developed in partnership with voluntary agency 3VA, this Sussex-wide project aims to support parents of seven- to 13-year olds to develop skills to manage their and their children’s anxiety, which is on the increase due to Covid-19. Families can self-refer or referrals can be made through schools, colleges or other organisations for the free six-week programme led by an experienced trainer and therapist. Alongside this parental programme, SLN has commissioned Holding Space to deliver low-cost confidential counselling for seven to 16-year olds across the region, as well as one-to-one phone support with a trained facilitator or counsellor.

This project builds on Holding Space's earlier work alongside Seaford Youth Counselling Project to offer counselling support for families struggling with mental health issues during the first 2020 lockdown. Emergency support, weekly sessions via phone and Zoom, and routes into longer-term mental health support were provided, along with coping strategies and activities for parents to do with their children at home. To find out the impact of this work, please read the case study.
