Get Career Confident – how to prepare for Careers guidance
As you welcome careers advisers in to support your learners, we have put together some top tips on how to get the most value from the experience. Please share with your colleagues, as guidance works best when the whole school is on board! We understand taking learners out of lessons can be disruptive, but you can read and share with staff evidence of the importance of career interventions in encouraging young peoples’ aspirations and successful transition to further and higher education.
Please encourage staff to use www.getcareerconfident.co.uk and they can see a menu of useful resources here. We can provide additional CPD to staff around the importance of careers and easy wins to help encourage every teacher to take an active part in the school’s careers programme.
Ideally guidance is integrated into a comprehensive careers education programme. Learners will always benefit more from guidance when they are well prepared and it is scaffolded as part of a careers journey throughout their schooling. We recommend sharing the following videos with learners in advance of guidance interventions and in addition, (if possible) the advisor can deliver an introduction assembly (please let us know if you would like us to deliver this):

We know that parents and carers have a huge impact on their childrens’ aspirations and future plans. It’s really important then, to include them in their child’s journey. We recommend a letter home to advise that their child will be having a careers meeting and you can include some of the video resources in the student section above, plus a link to our booklets. We also recommend students’ Careers Action Plans are shared with parents/carers (with their child’s permission) and for parents to be encouraged to be involved with careers activities taking place at the school.
