Talk to us

Each July Samaritans’ Talk To Us campaign raises awareness of the fact that the Samaritans team is available 24/7 to listen to anyone who is struggling to cope.  Here we look at some of their other invaluable mental health initiatives and resources for schools…

Every hour Samaritans respond to more than 400 calls for help on their free 116 123 phone line. But that’s not all they do.  They also provide a whole raft of free support and guidance for schools and colleges that you might not be aware of, but that are well worth exploring.

By going to the Samaritans website schools, colleges and youth groups can:

  • Book for trained Samaritans volunteers to come to their institution to give talks to young people about mental health, spotting the signs of suicide and the support they can offer
  • Access support to help them prepare for, or recover from a suicide or attempted suicide that has impacted their community through the Samaritans’ dedicated ‘Step by Step’ programme
  • Help develop vital resilience skills in their learners through the Samaritans DEAL programme which comes with a raft of free digital resources, lesson plans and activities.  The comprehensive programme is part of the PSHE Association’s Character Education toolkit intended to support the development of key character traits and behaviours within the context of planned PSHE lessons.
