It's not too late
After a year that has seen unprecedented disruption to the kinds of careers and progression advice young people typically receive, Sussex Learning Network and Uni Connect recently teamed up with East Sussex College Group, Chichester College Group, the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton to create two freely available webinars to guide Year 13 students and their parents and carers through the transitions process.
A tightly packed programme saw university and college staff outline the wide range of courses still open, alternative training options, how to apply for places and negotiate the clearing system and the various student finance options available.
Current students and their parents were also on hand to give hints and tips on all aspects of student life as well as honest accounts of what student life has been like during the pandemic.
Sarah, the Uni Connect Parent Ambassador said: “University life encourages students to live independently and for us, meant even-more-distant-parenting, but both my son and my daughter coped brilliantly, with the oldest graduating and getting her first job in the middle of it all.”
Key messages to come out of the well-attended webinars were that there’s still time to apply and that being at university or college during the next few years of economic uncertainty and restricted travel is a positive place to be.
Alistair Mason, Uni Connect Coordinator at Chichester College Group was delighted to see so many students and their parents in attendance, saying: “We had a great response, with participants saying they left the session much better prepared to make decisions regarding the next steps in their education.” UCAS Extra is open until 4th July.
