United Nation’s COP28 - 30th November – 12th December 2023
Acronyms and numbers – what IS COP28? COP stands for Conference of the Parties which is the main decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The COP brings together the 197 nations plus the European Union that have signed on to the Framework Convention. This is the 28th session of the Conference of Parties giving us COP28! The event is taking place from 30th November – 12th December and our newsletter this month is all themed around climate change.
COPs serve as the formal meeting place each year for the Parties to negotiate and agree on how to tackle climate change, reduce emissions and limit global warming. A primary task at COPs is the examination of national reports and emission inventories submitted by participating countries. These reports offer essential insights into each country's actions and their progress toward achieving the overarching goals of the Convention.
The theme of the day on the 8th December is youth, children, education and skills. There are numerous summits, workshops and roundtables taking place including:
- Student energy summit
- Placing children’s rights at the heart of climate action
- School meals coalition
- Youth, peace and climate security
