Brighton based charity Little Green Pig works with children from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them build their confidence through creative writing workshops. Could you help them reach more young people by becoming a volunteer story mentor?
Brighton based creative writing charity Little Green Pig – a pervious SLN Community Fund winner – is on the hunt for volunteer story mentors. The local charity helps children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, or who face challenging circumstances, to develop creative writing skills through informal, after school workshops.
Story mentors don’t have to have formal teacher or writing training to become a mentor, they just need to pass safeguarding checks and to be enthusiastic about reading, writing and firing the imagination of others.
The aim of the workshops is to provide children and young people aged between 6-18 years, with a safe and pressure free environment in which they can explore their creativity, build their communication skills and have fun. Through their work with Little Green Pig, young people come away not only with a love of reading and writing but also valuing their voice and with a bolstered sense of their self-worth.
The workshops take place on Mondays through to Thursdays from 3-5pm and on Mondays from 12.45 – 2.15, with volunteer story mentors needed for all sessions. All volunteers shadow existing story mentors to ensure an immersive training experience and will always be supported by workshop leaders.
