Let's fly the flag for apprenticeships!
With National Apprenticeship Week fast approaching (6-12 Feb) why not explore the many free resources out there that can help young people get to grips with how to access this pathway and understand the rewards it can bring…
Apprenticeship is becoming an increasingly sought-after option for young people. Last year, over 613,900 over the age of 19 took part in apprenticeship schemes – a rise of 3.3% on the previous year. However, there is still a lot of confusion about how to access this pathway and how to understand if it’s the right fit.
If you’re wanting to use National Apprenticeship Week to highlight this route as an alternative to university, it’s worth checking out our Get Career Confident site as a springboard for discussion. Here you’ll find a whole wealth of free resources from ‘How To’ videos that explain how to find and apply for apprenticeships, through to a directory of apprenticeships and traineeships available throughout Sussex. You can also hear from other young people talking about their apprenticeship experiences in our ‘See To Be’ videos.
And if you're wanting to broaden your search, you could also:
- Discover video case studies and directories of nation-wide apprenticeship opportunities on the official government apprenticeships’ website
- Explore the four different types of apprenticeships available on the UCAS site
- Search through all the live training and apprenticeship opportunities currently available in Sussex on the Apprenticeships in Sussex site
- It's also worth checking out the BBC Bitesize Careers site where you'll find lots of quizzes, videos and career profiles to bring apprenticeships to life. And on Wed 8th February at 2pm you can join a free, live Careers Lesson from the Science Museum, where careers experts will join industry apprentices and celebrities for a lively session to help students discover even more about apprenticeships
Apprenticeships bring so many benefits, from learning in-demand skills while getting paid, to gaining industry recognised qualifications and getting a feel for the work environment. There are also an increasingly range of sectors offering exciting apprenticeship positions, from the creative industries through to construction and engineering sectors as well as brand new sectors like the rapidly growing green economy. So why not use this year’s National Apprenticeship Week to get young people in your learning environment inspired by all they can offer?
