According to a report from The Prince’s Trust and The Learning & Work Institute young people are bearing the brunt of the post pandemic employment crisis. So what can you do to help ease their transition into the work place in such a tough climate?
Making the transition from education into the work place has never been easy, but post pandemic it’s tougher than ever. ‘Facing the Future: Employment Prospects for Young People after Coronavirus’* – a report from The Princes Trust states that:
- Under 25’s account for 3 in 5 jobs lost during the pandemic
- Young people are over represented in the sectors forecast to see lower employment in the long term
- The cost to young people entering the labour market in 2021 (in terms of lost earnings and damage to employment prospects) is forecast to be £14.4bn over the next seven years
It’s a bleak picture that can feel daunting for young people and those trying to help them into the labour market. But we’re here to help.
Careers Beyond Covid is our free programme open to anyone aged 16-30 living in the Coast to Capital region. If you have students looking to go straight from their current stage of education into employment you can sign them up for an extensive programme of free employability support simply by registering here.
The Careers Beyond Covid programme - funded by the European Social Fund - is designed to give young people all the insight and skills they need to secure employment in a competitive landscape and includes:
- One-to-one guidance with qualified careers advisors
- Confidence building and CV writing workshops
- Mental health coaching
- Financial aid where necessary
- Employability skills training
- Opportunities to speak with local employers
- Help from recruitment professionals
Miranda Glavin, founder and director of Elev8Careers, delivery partner in the programme, explains: “Careers Beyond Covid gives young people positive advice and practical support to help them find work that is right for them – even in the toughest landscape. By signing them up to the free support available you can help young people in your learning environment get inspired, get confident, get skills and ultimately get a job.”
Local Sussex-based employers can also access free support through the Careers Beyond Covid programme which has been designed to address the employment crisis through a 360 degree approach. By signing up here, employers can get:
- Help with filling entry level, apprenticeship and graduate positions with motivated and diverse applicants
- Advice on attracting young talent through new channels
- Support with training and retaining young talent
- Access to events in which they can meet young people currently looking for opportunities
As well as running bespoke programmes of support for registered individuals we are also running a series of free careers fairs and skills related events and workshops throughout the Spring and Summer, with 10 already planned and several more in the pipeline.
