We commissioned the report – carried out by renowned economics research agency, Emsi Burning Glass – to enable us to provide local education providers with a comprehensive overview of predicted labour market conditions across our region. Our hope is that by using this in-depth data, local schools, sixth form and FE colleges will be able to enhance and adjust their education provision to best-fit future demand, giving their students the very best chance of securing rewarding, in-demand roles.
With the total number of jobs across the region set to increase by nearly 30,000 to 2030, and the working age population set to increase by 1.8% over the same period, West Sussex, East Sussex and Brighton & Hove look set to offer solid prospects to the job seekers of the future. However, some sectors are predicted to grow far faster than others and some are set to have higher demand than current supply can meet.

It’s all about ensuring that education pathways in the region are equipping young people with the best skills to help them secure rewarding roles in the future.”
Our latest labour market trends report indicates that the five pathways projected to have the highest number of job openings across the region from 2021-2026 are:
1. Retail – 86,901
2. Health – 63,730
3. Transport – 58,020
4. Engineering, manufacturing, process and control – 56,670
5. Hospitality – 55,370
And it indicates that some of the fastest growing sectors in the region are likely to be:
1. Services activities – 29.6%
2. Professional, scientific and technical activities – 28.6%
3. Information and communication – 23.3%
4. Transportation, storage and logistics – 18.9%
However, whilst it predicts higher demand than supply and course development opportunities in: nursing, personal care, onsite construction activities and architectural and engineering activities, it also suggests potential oversupply of achievements in science, management and administration, and media, broadcast and production.
However, the report suggests ways in which oversupply issues could be tailored to meet emerging demands. For instance, it outlines how science courses can be tailored to focus on contributing to the innovations needed to secure a ‘Net Zero’ future.
