Insights from local authorities across England, on good practice for keeping children in care close to home. 

Over the past decade, local authorities have faced increasing challenges in delivering sufficiency: ensuring that they have the right number and type of homes available within their local area to meet the needs of children in their care. It’s resulted in a dramatic increase in children being moved far away from their home communities. Since 2013, the number of children in care living more than 20 miles from home has increased by two-thirds.

For too many children, this systemic failure has meant being separated from friends, family, schools, and the relationships that matter the most to them. Through Become's Gone Too Far campaign, they’ve highlighted the devastating impact moving far away from communities can have on children’s wellbeing, relationships, education and sense of self-worth.
