Overcoming the Barriers to Progression in HE

The 'Overcoming the Barriers to Working Class Students’ Participation in Higher Education' report was commissioned by SLN to explore whether it would be helpful to develop more contextualised approaches to overcoming barriers to participation in higher education. The research was conducted in four Sussex schools with sixth forms, chosen to provide a diversity of locations.

The research highlighted concerns around the challenge of identifying young people for inclusion in widening participation interventions as well as the impact of the increased cost of attending university on young people’s decision-making. ‘Overcoming the Barriers’ also draws attention to the importance of individual professional understandings and commitment within schools.
