The Role Models Project is a peer-led mentoring project where University of Sussex students create workshops based on what they wish they’d known when they were younger and deliver these in local secondary schools. The workshops provide a safe and supportive space to explore topics within Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) through creative and participatory activities.

During the pandemic, the Role Models team were keen to not let lockdown stop the valuable work they have been doing. Instead of meeting in person, volunteers from Sussex University have been communicating online to create activities for young people to try at home and have developed three different resource books.

“It’s absolutely great and really fits the needs of students in terms of their wellbeing and gives clear and compassionate guidance with a nice range of resources/activities which would suit all learners – well done to all the team. I particularly like the ‘rank them in order of enjoyment and meaningfulness’ activity.  Really looking forward to the next ones.”  (Hugh Garling, Head of PSHE – Longhill High School)

The Wellbeing Activity Book is aimed at students aged 12-17 and covers themes such as:

  • Sharing stories and strategies for emotional wellbeing
  • Ideas for activities to do during lockdown
  • Strength, gratitude and resilience building activities
  • Creative and crafty ideas

A parent of a student at Longhill comments:

“Now that the school regime has eased slightly, I have been looking through the Wellbeing Covid 19 booklet and found it totally inspiring for myself as well as for Rose.

I am aware of the toll that lockdown is taking on our young people. We need more self care at this time, not more pressure to achieve. There are some great ideas in the booklet which hopefully the students at Longhill can take with them well after lockdown has ended.”

The Gender and Sexuality workbook has a range of activities that introduce language, history and definitions around LGTBQ+ and is also suitable for students aged 12+

Futures Workbook helps young people to explore their future aspirations and goals.
