East Sussex County Council has a successful record of tracking learners in-line with statutory RPA duties (Raising Participation Age), as well as providing enhanced support for those learners that are NEET (young people not in Education, Employment or Training). As of January 2018, the South East has over 4000 16-17 year olds currently NEET with 385 of these learners residing in East Sussex. To help ensure that our more vulnerable young people are being supported through their educational journey, funding has been extended to MY Trust who deliver Youth Employability Services.
“At The MY Trust we are working with all the secondary schools in East Sussex to support their year 11 students through the next steps into further education and transition from school. The support we offer via NCOP funding is 1:1 support with students to help them explore their options for year 12 and beyond, supporting them to identify and overcome any obstacles that maybe preventing them to make decisions about their future. We have also been running group sessions in schools where we encourage the students to look at their own ambitions and resilience in an interactive way.
We are flexible in approach and work with the all schools differently according to their identified needs , the specifics of their year 11 cohort and the schools ambitions for the transition work. The My Trust have also been working with year 12 and 13 students on a 1:1 basis to research their future options and opportunities. We support the students to explore their future goals and aspirations. The students we have engaged with have made positive steps towards securing year 12 destinations and following group work sessions, some students have asked for 1:1 support to explore options and we have also provided extra sessions for specific students on HE and apprenticeships. Feedback from teachers and parents have been that students have been more engaged at school following our sessions.” Mel Parr, Area Director (Sussex and Brighton & Hove)
Funding is enabling two dedicated transition officers to work with targeted young people from across East Sussex and have to date engaged with 899 learners.
