The Brighton & Hove City Council Leaving Care team is developing and delivering a programme for Care Leavers who are at university or have graduated from university to provide impartial advice and guidance to children in care and care leavers who are or maybe thinking about going to university.
The team will promote and explain the range of support, funding and services available to care leavers. For those who successfully apply and start at university they will be a point of contact and support whilst they are settling and establishing themselves at university to help this stage goes smoothly as possible. They will act as a link between children in care/care leavers and the local authority to ensure they receive their full entitlements and necessary support.
They will provide individual tailored support to address identified barriers to going to, and staying at university as well as providing friendship and support at university for first two terms.
The project is working with Schools, Colleges, Social Workers and Personal Advisers to refer targeted young people to take part in the programme
The project aims to demonstrate:
- Increase in understanding of choices at HE and how to apply to
- Increase in understanding of support available at HE
- Increased confidence in their ability to succeed at HE
- Increased confidence to remain in HE beyond the first term
