SLN:COP and Elev8 Careers recently teamed up at the South East Big Bang Fair to offer NCOP students the chance to have a free careers interview during their visit.

Part of a nationwide programme, the Big Bang Fair South East celebrates and raises the profile of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). The event took place at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex across 27th and 28th June.  Record numbers attended this years’ fair with an estimated 10,000 young people coming along to enjoy a day of exciting and fun-filled shows, interactive displays and hands-on workshops, inspiring them to consider the varied opportunities and careers that studying STEM subjects can open up to them.

Additional funding through SLN:COP enabled 140 young people to access a qualified careers advisor during their visit. Students also took part in a quiz which encouraged them to think more broadly about the wide range of careers in these areas and explore them in greater depth helping to raise their awareness of study and career options.

The UK continues to face a STEM skills shortage with 39% of companies still struggling to recruit workers with the advanced technical STEM skills they need and much work is being done nationally to inspire young people to study and progress into STEM related careers.

“The Big Bang is a fantastic opportunity to build awareness, knowledge and enthusiasm about the world of STEAM (that’s STEM with the Arts!) Our role as careers advisors at the event is to help young people make sense of all the new information and apply it to their individual situations and aspirations. We thoroughly enjoyed the two days and from the many conversations we had we are sure the young people did too, and that there are many more inspired students now considering a future in STEAM.” Miranda Glavin, Director, Elev8Careers
