Developing a Foundation diploma in bioscience
Steve Robinson
The aim of this project is to develop and introduce new vocational courses in biomedical science which are appropriate for part-time day release learners already in employment, as well being part of a Foundation degree suitable for full-time learners.
The Foundation diploma is a new qualification validated by the University of Brighton which will consist of 60 credits at Level 4 and 60 credits at Level 5. The highly vocational course will widen participation and allow students already employed to study at Level 4 and Level 5. This approach may be beneficial as a model to develop further Foundation diplomas from our existing Foundation degrees and diplomas delivered within the SLN and nationally.
Objectives include the development of a coherent package of Level 1 and Level 2 modules designed to meet employers' training needs and which ensure students can progress between levels. Employers will be involved in the design and delivery of some of the course, and student-centred learning will also be developed. The work will contribute to widening participation and allowing students already in employment to access Level 4 courses. Skills in blended curriculum development will be enhanced for practitioners. Improved employer engagement and vocational skills will also be gained by practitioners
