Day 2 - Learning at work in Sussex
Over 160 delegates joined day two of the conference. The theme was learning at work in Sussex. In welcoming participants Chris Baker, SLN Director, set the scene for the day by looking at the implications of the Leitch Review for higher education.
For those of you interested in a fuller analysis of the Leitch Report we include a presentation made by Mike Campbell to the LSC conference
Education Led Regeneration which took place in Bramber on the 26 June. We are grateful to Mike for permission to use this. The much anticipated government response to Leitchwas released on the 18 July.
He concluded that the implementation of the recommendations would have implications for the following:-
- The relationship between further and higher education and the funding of both
- Whether there would need to be a differential response from universities to the challenge of employer engagement
- How the workplace would assume increasing importance as a focus for higher level learning if not teaching
- How it would ask serious questions about what universities were doing to meet the needs of adults already in the workforce.
The day provided an opportunity to look at what is going on in higher education in Sussex to meet the Leitch agenda. This was explored under four headings:-
- What do we want from learning at work?
- How can I learn at work?
- What can we learn from research?
- What next for vocational learning in Sussex?
In the midst of this discussion the final signatures were added to the Sussex Vocational Progression Accord which will become operational from September 2007.
