Pathways and progression into vocational learning in Sussex

Susan Bishop and Daniel Bennett

This research study has been designed to gain insight and understanding of the choices made by Sussex-based students in years 12 and 13 and in Further Education institutions regarding their future, whether this is to go into Higher Education or straight into employment. It is hoped that the study will give Higher Education providers in Sussex a rich source of information that will inform their future curriculum strategies, give them an understanding of students' decision-making processes and reveal the key variables involved in students' education and future employment choices. It will also seek to identify any particular barriers to progression that are encountered by learners who might be considered disadvantaged in any respect.

The research methodology will incorporate qualitative and quantitative methods, collecting information via questionnaires and focus groups from a sample of education providers, ensuring this incorporates a range of qualifications (FDA, A/AS levels, BTEC National Diploma, NVQ, AVCE etc.) and a geographic spread of institutions.

This study will support and inform current progression initiatives, such as the Sussex Liaison and Progression Accord (SLPA), which recognises the need for education providers to maintain existing networks and build new relationships and will enable Higher Education providers in Sussex to market their products more effectively.

Project Update, April 2008

1717 questionnaires were sent to 12 schools across the Sussex area that agreed to participate. 878 Responses have been received and these have been analysed and are awaiting further cross tabulation and extrapolation. Initial findings have been that at least 80% of respondents are interested in continuing their education with over 50% intending to study for a BA degree. Affecting their decision as to where to study the cost of living is high on the agenda followed by accommodation and location. Two focus groups were held in March providing a rich source of information about motivations and expectations of HE. Links were made to deepen the results of the qualitative research. For example the quality of teaching ranked high on the research questionnaire was quality of teaching which links with being renown for good overall results and teachers that provide a good level of support. High on all the students’ agenda was good job prospects and learning new life skills.
