The experiences of non-graduates undertaking masters courses
Gail Louw, Carmel Keller, David Baker and Matthew Hankins
The research looks into the experiences of non-graduates attending a range of health-related masters courses in the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. A range of health professionals, both graduates and non graduates attend the courses. The research focusses on the experiences of non-graduates on these programmes, their learning, and how they have coped with the mixed intake. Areas investigated are the non-graduates’ use of and engagement with academic practices. Through one-to-one interviews with a small number of current and past students, we looked to assess students’ accounts of their feelings, practices and experiences of reading and writing academic and professional literature, their interactions with staff and peers, the development of their critical thinking and their oral contributions to the programme of study.
