Research commissioned by East Surrey College and funded by the Centre for Work and Learning into demand for a level 4 CPD offer in salons in the East Surrey College local area. Additionally, the research aimed to establish the level of commitment from employers with regard to time and funding to cover fees.

An investigation into employer Demand for Qualifications for Sales Professionals

A developmental project undertaken by Chichester College and the University of Chichester funded by the Centre for Work and Learning. The project tested the market in relation to professional qualifications for sales managers and laid the groundwork for the development and provision of accredited training to meet the needs of employers in terms of context, format and method of delivery.

CPD at HE level for the Spa industries in Sussex and the South East

A developmental project undertaken by Sussex Downs College and Sussex Coast College Hastings and funded by the Centre for Work and Learning. The key focus is the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and training needs of employees working in the Spa industry. By interviewing local employers the intention was to identify accurately training needs and business priorities before developing or marketing an offer to the spa industry.

An Investigation of Training Courses in the Hospitality, Travel, Tourism and Events Sectors in Brighton and Hove

City College Brighton and Hove were commissioned to investigate training offered by other training providers against existing training courses offered by CCBH. Secondary objectives included the identification of any perceived skills gaps amongst employees in the relevant sectors and to gain knowledge of training in those sectors especially with respect to induction of new employees and training of longer term staff.

Building on the 4%: Is there a market for Apprenticeship Progression in Sussex?

SCTP were commissioned by the SLN to undertake research that sought to identify whether there is a market for apprenticeship progression in Sussex. The project's aims were as follows:

  • Identify through interviews with current and past Advanced Apprentices, and their employers, if further work on reducing barriers for apprentice progression is likely to result in increased uptake of higher education opportunities by this group of learners.
  • Establish if there is a desire, on the part of Learners, to progress onto further qualifications on completion of their current Advanced Apprenticeship programme and to ascertain if this aim would be encouraged and/or supported by their employers
  • Identify if there is a potentially underexploited market which is currently preventing Advanced Apprentices from progressing, or if the current rates of progression are fulfilling employee and employer expectations and ambitions?

The SLN commissioned Papworth Research and Consultancy to undertake a research project to inform the development and promotion of foundation degrees in Sussex. The research has resulted in recommendations in the following areas:

  • Successful methods of marketing foundation degrees to target audiences
  • The main factors that influence students to apply to study a foundation degree.
  • The foundation degree student in Sussex - whether foundation degree students tend to be within the traditional ‘widening participation’ groups, and whether this varies across the curriculum, and between full and part-time provision.
  • The experiences of foundation degree students at different geographical locations across Sussex, and how these compare.
  • The differences, if any, that are reported by current foundation degree students between their expectations and experience of foundation degrees.
  • Levels of awareness of the current foundation degree campaign, and of the existence of foundation degrees.

Graduate Retention Study in Coastal West Sussex

The project investigated what factors influence graduate retention and employability within the West Sussex Coastal AIF. Its aim is to develop an understanding of the employment/labour market sectors and investigate the reasons and influences behind why graduates (including potential graduates) choose to study, live and work within or outside West Sussex Coastal AIF. (Funded by Coastal West Sussex, managed by the Sussex Learning Network and undertaken by Step Ahead Research Ltd.)

 

SEEC foundation degrees and credit study

The SLN commissioned SEEC to carry out a study looking at the feasibility of developing a common credit framework for foundation degrees in Sussex.

The study identifies key issues relating to credit, and makes recommendations on taking these forward in the context of learner progression.

This report builds on the Progression and Credit Study undertaken by the Sussex Learning Network in December 2006, and complements that study by reviewing:

  • institutional processes which support or hinder academic credit awarded through the accreditation of prior certificated learning (APCL) or prior experiential learning (APEL)
  • the recognition given to learning gained from the workplace
  • the flexibility within programme structures across the SLN
  • transfer arrangements relating to credit transfer by receiving institutions
  • any key issues relating to credit that arise as a result of the investigation, and recommendations on taking these forward in the context of learner progression.

Together with Higher York and the Kent and Medway Lifelong Learning Network, we formed a group of three LLNs to engage in a process of peer review. Through a series of group meetings and regular communication we examined each of our respective areas of work, performing the role of critical friend. We produced a report as a result of this process which we have made available to other LLNs.

This report will form part of the SLN's overall evaluation. Its aim is to provide evidence of the SLN’s effectiveness in reaching its target audience, and assess the impact of learning on the experience and plans of higher education students on a range of vocational courses. The report includes analysis of data relating to the learners enrolled on places provided via the SLN, as well as the results of a series of in depth interviews and focus groups.
