Sport & Leisure update
An analysis of provision identified health promotion and personal training, and sports promotion, as critical areas of shortfall. Working with local employers, the project team developed foundation degrees in Health Promotion and Personal Training, and in Community Sports Coaching. Engagement with employers, a major focus throughout the project, resulted in positive relationships with regard to work on foundation degrees. The project was also very successful in fostering partnerships between HE and FE institutions and between schools and HE.
The SLN Sport and Leisure team completed its work in August 2008. Full details in SLN Three Year Report 2005-2008 Section 3.6.

The ambitious plans announced by SportscoachUK to secure an extra 42,000 sports coaching roles by 2016 will provide an unprecedented opportunity for people to develop a career in coaching. The governments recent announcement of their intention to develop world class community sport will give coaching another boost, and together with the ambition to create 42,000 paid coaching roles throughout local communities will give sports coaches a great opportunity to develop their careers.
The Sussex Learning Network are responding to the challenge created by sportscoachUK by developing a new Foundation Degree in Community Sports Coaching that will provide students with the vocational competencies required to deliver coaching sessions. This innovative programme has been developed by the University of Chichester, Chichester College and Chichester District Council and a key feature of the programme is the incorporation of work-based coaching placements undertaken in the local community. This work-based coaching placement will give students the opportunity to really develop their skills and become successful sports coaches.
