Computing update

Through the work of this project SLN curriculum groups were able to access new approaches, resources and expertise in e-learning and explore its potential for their subject specialisms. The project team mapped, analysed and disseminated good practice and expertise; piloted e-learning resources for vocational learners; created e-learning networks across HE and FE; developed projects for particular curriculum areas; and disseminated its work through educational conferences and publications. Work was also carried out on progression agreements for transition from foundation to honours degrees, and on employer engagement.

The SLN Computing and e-learning team completed its work in August 2008. Full details in SLN Three Year Report 2005-2008 Section 3.4.

Computing overview

The Leitch Review of Skills (2006) has indicated a large skills gap in the IT and computing areas, which is projected to get bigger as we move further into the twenty-first century. Potentially, there are insufficient employees to fulfil employer needs. This threatens the economic prosperity of the local area and the country as a whole. The proliferation of computing qualifications across this curriculum area (which are provided by training organisations in addition to academic and vocational programmes in FE and HE), makes it difficult for students to identify study pathways.

Highlights from our Second Year Review

This PDF document is the full Second Year Review 2006-07 for Computing and e-Learning.

In 2007-08, the computing strand is focusing on the development of a progression agreement, building on the mapping of provision that has been carried out. The Open University is leading on these developments, and focusing initially on an agreement that facilitates entry to HE at institutions across Sussex for those learners studying for or holding one of the many industry qualifications that exist within the sector. This work will involve mapping qualifications against the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), and investigating any opportunities for the accreditation of prior learning (APL) and credit transfer. The aim is for the progression agreement to be in place by March 2008.
