Joan Gale - HNC Business
Previously Joan (55) had achieved O and A levels, as well as vocational training in secretarial skills and an NVQ3 in Customer Service. She says she decided to study for an HNC in Business because “I want to stay in the area and would love to get a more interesting and varied job. Hopefully this qualification will give me the opportunity to do this.”
Joan chose the HNC in Business as “it is an excellent course with varied content and really useful information. It is giving me a good insight into business in general. I chose Chichester College because it is close to home and I could get to the course after work, and it was a subject I was interested in. I would be happy to do a further course at Chichester. I have found it an excellent college to study at.”
Toni and Julie - HND Animal Management
Toni Williams (19) and Julie Wilkinson (20) are studying the HND in Animal Management at Chichester College. They both studied the National Diploma in Animal Management before this and are finding the course interesting and varied, although stretching at times. Both Toni and Julie are doing this course because they want to work with animals in the future. Julie wants to specialise in zoo work. The availability of this course at Chichester College was one of the key factors that persuaded them to continue and take a higher education course.
Sarah Davies - HND Beauty Science
Sarah Davies (19) is studying an HND in Beauty Science at Chichester College. She joined the college after taking 2 A levels in Psychology and Photography at Worthing Sixth Form College and chose Chichester College because of its excellent reputation. Sarah is really enjoying her course and says that she's finding the work experience invaluable. She is applying to work as an assistant beauty manager in a health club and in the future would like to work for a beauty company as a trainer, maybe returning to do a top-up degree in the future and perhaps teacher training. Who knows, one day she might be teaching alongside her current lecturers!
Lisa Watts - HND Beauty Science
Lisa Watts (24) has been a student at Chichester College for a while, first in hairdressing and then on beauty courses. Lisa chose Chichester not just because it is close to where she lives, but also because it has an excellent reputation for beauty and was highly recommended by other people who had studied here. She finds the content of the HND in Beauty Science very good and feels that everyone’s needs are met by the way the course is delivered.
Her work placement went so well that they offered her a job at the end of her first year. She has an interview with a cruise company lined up and is really hoping to be using her beauty skills on the high seas soon. In the future Lisa intends to do a top up BSc in complementary therapies.
Frank, James & Ollie - HND Hospitality Management
Frank Ubsdell (19), James Corrie (20) and Ollie Page (22) joined Chichester College together in 2003 on a 2 year Craft Catering Course where they gained NVQ1 and 2 in Cookery and Food and Drink Service. They then specialised with a NVQ3 in Food Service Advanced Skills, with significant success.
HND Hospitality Management was their next step. They were all up for this new challenge and have successfully completed the first year of this programme. They are currently undertaking their industrial placements in excellent hotels and restaurants, before returning to college for the remainder of the course.
Will they want to work together when they leave? “No!” is their response. “We have really enjoyed the courses and the opportunity to progress. Each of us has won prizes in our previous courses, but none of us thought we would get this far. There is a lot of work for the HND, but the course and assignment work are interesting. The assignments are closely related to the hospitality industry and practical work, team working and presentations are our favourite types of assessment. The lecturers are great too, really helpful and friendly.”
After five years at Chichester College, they are all keen to secure management positions in hospitality when they graduate, and in the future are thinking about topping up their HNDs to a degree.
Charlotte Cotcher - Foundation Degree Business and Management
Charlotte Cotcher (31) achieved 3 GCSEs at C and above while at school. After school she went straight into employment. Charlotte joined the part-time Foundation Degree in Business and Management at Chichester College and says that the course is excellent. “Having been out of education for a long time I was a little sceptical about my ability to study again but I found that the
flexible study regime makes it a lot easier to fit study around family life and a full time job.
I have found that all of the course content so far has been very relevant to
my workplace and has opened my eyes to many aspects of business life.
Charlotte does intend to continue her higher education. “I will need to continue for another 18 months for a full degree, to be honest I think if I’ve come this far I will continue for the extra 18 months. I actually enjoy the discipline needed and feel as if I’m achieving something.”
Charlotte is confident that her degree will help her develop a satisfying career in business management.
