Organisations offering information on disability
Many students have a disability, or are caring for somebody with a disability. This list focuses on the organisations most likely to be relevant to students - apologies for any glaring omissions. There are also information sheets for students with disabilities in FE and HE.
- Abilitynet is a national charity helping disabled adults and children use computers and the internet by adapting and adjusting their technology.
- Arthritis Care provides information and services and campaigns on behalf of people with arthritis. The website includes information about going to university.
- ASBAH is the leading UK registered charity providing information and advice about spina bifida and hydrocephalus to individuals, families and carers. There is an education section on the website.
- BDA The British Dyslexia Association promotes early identification and support in schools to ensure opportunity to learn for dyslexic learners. It also seeks to represent the needs of dyslexic people on leaving school, in higher education and in work.
- British Stammering Association provides information and support on stammering/stuttering. There are several items on the website about being a student and managing at university.
- Cystic Fibrosis Trust provides information, advice, support and, where appropriate, financial assistance to anyone affected by Cystic Fibrosis. Factsheets are available for students.

Dyslexia Action is a national charity and the UK's leading provider of services and support for people with dyslexia and literacy difficulties. It provides specialist assessment and tuition for children and adults.
- Dyspraxia Foundation helps people to understand and cope with dyspraxia. The website includes a section on Higher Education.
- Epilepsy Action Largest member-led epilepsy organisation in Britain, acting as the voice for the UK's estimated 456,000 people with epilepsy. The website includes a section for students.
- LTCA is the umbrella body for national voluntary organisations in the UK working to meet the needs of people with long-term health conditions. If you cannot find the organisation you are looking for, LTCA may be able to help you find it.
- MIND is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales and is involved with the Learning and Skills Council and has a place on its Forum on Learning Difficulties and Disabilities. This is beginning to address ways in which structures within the system can encourage colleges to improve their facilities.
- National Autistic Society exists to champion the rights and interests of all people with autism and to ensure that they and their families receive quality services appropriate to their needs.
- Rethink national mental health membership charity for severe mental illness, works to help everyone affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life. The website includes an area offering information to students on course choice, financial help and difficulties while studying.
- RNIB Royal National Institute for the Blind provides information and advice, assessments, audio tape and Brailling services and student support for blind and partially sighted people. The website includes several case studies of student experiences and FAQs on further and higher education.
- RNID Royal National Institute for Deaf People headquarters provides information, training and communication support for deaf and hard of hearing people.
- Sense UK Deafblind Charity Reputation for its expertise in working with deafblind people. The website includes information about educational choices for school leavers and adults.
- SKILL: National Bureau for Students with Disabilities is a national charity promoting opportunities for young people and adults with any kind of impairment in post-16 education, training and employment. This site also provides a good information service.
