5 things you need to know about physical education in Sussex
1. About physical education
Physical education is a compulsory part of the curriculum in all schools. In order to teach, you need a degree and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). Career progress in teaching physical education can lead to a range of management roles in schools, LEAs (local education authorities) and national agencies both within sport and education.
2. Skills and experience
You need a strong interest in teaching physical education to young people along with experience of coaching, teaching and leading relevant activities. A high level of personal, practical involvement and expertise in a range of sporting activities, including governing body coaching awards, would be desirable. Good communication and organisational skills are also necessary.
3. Opportunities in the area
Traditionally many graduates find employment in the Sussex-Hampshire coastal strip region and elsewhere in Sussex. This is a highly competitive area and potential physical education teachers need to ensure that they have strong personal profiles.
