6 things you need to know about sports coaching in Sussex

1. About sports coaching

Coaches are employed by national governing bodies, clubs, county and regional associations including local authorities.  Coaches are now able to draw from a range of scientific disciplines (psychology, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, for example) which can inform, educate and underpin their coaching practice.

Opportunities for coaches have increased considerably during the last decade.  Coaching is now an important part of the government's strategy for sport.

2. Skills and experience

National governing body coaching awards are seen as integral to the practicing coach and employment opportunities are only likely to be available to those who have achieved at least a level 2 coaching award.

Sports coaches have good, practical delivery skills with an all round understanding of sports science and the processes that underpin coaching practice.

  • Many coaches are volunteers but they should all be qualified in coaching skills.
  • Sports coaches often attend a range of other short courses that develop their knowledge and skills to support the whole coaching process. For example, attendance on Sports Coach UK short courses in coaching equity, disabled performers, child protection, and national governing body update courses.

3. Entry level qualifications

A wide range of qualifications will be acceptable to get onto a degree course in sports coaching. A strong interest in coaching and already having coaching qualifications would be desirable for someone wishing to enter a  degree course.  Evidence of volunteering and undertaking leadership roles in sport will also be advantageous.

4. Opportunities for sports coaches

Opportunities are increasing as there is still a high volume requirement for coaches in Sussex. This is also evident across county borders into Hampshire, Surrey and Kent.  Sports Coach UK have identified the need to create an extra 42,000 paid coaching position by 2016.  The development of coaching as a professionally regulated vocation is also underway.
