- South East Coast Ambulance Service operates from 63 ambulance stations across Kent, Surrey and Sussex and employs just over 2,800 people
- over 3,500 Police Officers work in Sussex and there are 2000 Police Staff in roles from fingerprint analyst or call handler to Scenes of Crime Officers or IT officers
- intake of personnel to the Armed Forces from civilian life stood at 26,280 in 2002; 12% were female. 63% of all entrants joined the Army, 20% the Naval Service and 17% the Royal Air Force
- HM Prison Service in Surrey and Sussex employs over 1,500 staff. In Sussex there are prisons at Ford in West Sussex and Lewes in East Sussex
