Success for vocational students at Central Sussex College

Salon owners, trainers, managers and senior stylists attended Central Sussex College on Monday 15 January to collect certificates of achievement from the Principal during a lunchtime presentation.

The Sussex Learning Network (SLN) seeks to bring together employers, learners and providers to develop opportunities for vocational learning at levels 4 and above. Central Sussex College is one of the 16 providers of further and higher education in Sussex that form part of this broad network.

The students successfully completed a Level 4 City & Guilds Higher Professional Certificate in Technical Salon Management, a qualification that’s only offered in the South East by Central Sussex College. The hair professionals from Crawley, Horsham and East Grinstead cleared their appointment books to attend the College’s Le Cordon Vert training restaurant, where they received their certificates from College Principal Dr Russell Strutt and enjoyed a celebratory lunchtime buffet.

Director of Faculty for Service Industries Mary Wiles said: “We started offering the level four qualification after six years of extensive research into how other providers, including those in Ireland, offered this high level of training.”

Executive Director of 14-19 Sue Dare emphasised the importance of having support from family, friends and employers while studying for a qualification alongside a full time career. She said: “The level four qualification was introduced in response to the Leitch review of skills, which states that having a high level of education in any industry is vital to extending the skills of the workforce and thus strengthening the economy. Hopefully your achievements here today are the start of further opportunities for developing professional skills to a high level. You should all be exceptionally proud.”
