Research Seminar on the work of the Sussex Learning Network

24 Nov 2006

The SLN Project - Medium and long term implications for the School of Service Management

Pete Odgers and Conor Sheehan are leading the SLN’s work on Travel, Tourism and Retail. They are holding a Seminar on 29 November to tell colleagues about the implications of their work.

In addition to their work with the SLN, both work at the University of Brighton’s School of Service Management where Pete is a Senior Lecturer and Conor is FdA Programme Leader.

Their work on mapping the curriculum in Sussex indicated the need for the development of education in retail management and food and culinary arts.  This is now being addressed and you can keep up to date with developments by reading their SLN Travel, Tourism and Retail update.

Tourism, retail and hospitality activity in Sussex is considerably above average national levels, with the county employing 234,215 people. Only 13% of the hospitality, travel and tourism workforce in the county are qualified to NQF level 4 or above and there is a shortage of competent managers to meet business needs. Research findings suggested the need for more accessible and flexible education provision that is aligned with the skills level of the workforce.

Details of the seminar

1 – 2 pm, Room G19, Greynore 1 Building
Eastbourne campus, Brighton University
