Recent study reinforces need for Learning Opportunities

The Sutton Trust’s October 2008 review highlights key findings relating to higher education participation, attainment and aspirations. Whilst the main focus of the report is on increasing the numbers of young students entering university level study, it also addresses the importance of lifelong learning for the workforce. Despite recent increases in the supply of graduates, demand from the labour market remains strong. Foundation degrees are seen as an important vehicle for this, particularly for those who want to earn and learn at the same time.

The report highlights the shortage of consistent quality information, advice and guidance for learners moving into and through higher education.

How are we addressing this?

Learning Opportunities is addressing the key findings of the review by providing information, advice and guidance for learners and those who advise them. The service is particularly aimed at those in work or returning to work who have little or no knowledge of higher education.

The Learning Opportunities model links together a range of institutions and organisations to provide a one stop shop. It includes careers advice on 70 careers strands across 14 broad careers areas, information sheets relating to finance and a wide range of other important issues, plus a personal planning pack to guide learners through the decision making process. In addition it links to the course descriptions of all Foundation degrees, HNDs and HNCs and provides a direct email link to each institution.

Learning Opportunities in Sussex is now being rolled out to a further 8 counties to become Learning Opportunities in the South East. We are updating and refreshing the content and adding some innovative technology to enable more sophisticated and personalised searches.
