New Diplomas welcomed, while A-level review postponed

26 Oct 2007

An article from the BBC released on the 25 October 2007 reports the views from various key organisations across the education sector on the government's announcement of the new 14-19 Diplomas, and the postponement of the review of A-levels to 2013.

Those providing a responce include:

  • Diana Warwick, chief executive, Universities UK
  • Dr Wendy Piatt, director general, Russell Group of universities
  • Prof Steve Smith, chair, 1994 Group of universities
  • Dr John Dunford, general secretary, Association of School and College Leaders
  • Martin Johnson, acting deputy general secretary, Association of Teachers and Lecturers
  • Chris Banks, chair, Learning and Skills Council
  • Maggie Scott, director of learning and quality, Association of Colleges
  • Chris Keates, general secretary, NASUWT teachers' union
  • Richard Lambert, director general, Confederation of British Industry
  • Andy Powell, CEO, educational foundation Edge

Generally there was a broad welcoming of the new diplomas and agreement that they needed time to 'bed in' before the whole system and the fate of A-levels could be reviewed.
