Creative Arts Business Module
21 Nov 2008

The SLN is looking for feedback on a newly developed HE business module designed to equip students with the employment skills they need to succeed in the creative arts sector.
The unit is intended for study at the new NQF levels 5/6 (second year HE), over 12-15 teaching sessions of approximately 2 hours each (80 guided learning hours). The unit has not yet been validated, meaning that it can be customised to suit the purposes of individual institutions, who are then free to take it through their validation processes.
Module aims:
- Encourage students to examine their employment from the business perspective of their creative sector and to understand the role of finance in creative enterprises
- Identify their career ambitions within the context of their personal skills and attributes and to assess their employment or self-employment prospects through engagement in research and analysis of the creative industries.
- Encourage the development of employable and self-reliant practitioners with strong communication, networking and planning skills.
- Encourage students to understand and respond to the needs of industry though work experience and in the context of employer engagement.
- Develop suitable transferable and appropriate key skills
The module was the product of a collaboration between SLN Student Consultant, Matt Herd, and SLN Creative Arts Consultant, Paul Andersen. After producing the module's content, Paul worked with Matt on the module's look and feel.
This project should be considered a precursor to the work of the Centre for Work and Learning. More information on this exciting new strand of activity will be available soon.
