The latest figures published yesterday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that 31.2% of the workforce now have a higher level qualification.

The figure, taken from the 2008 Labour Force Survey, shows the number of working-age people  with a level 4 qualification or above. The government's target is for this to rise to 34% by 2011 and to hit the Leitch target of 40% by 2020.

Other interesting statistics coming out of the report show 126,800 people having completed apprenticeship frameworks in 2008-09 and 234,000 having started them.
