Sussex Learning Network

bringing higher education within reach of the workplace

University of Sussex

Based within the Centre for Community Engagement (CCE), this CWL project intends to develop short, modular courses which can be accredited as part of a professional portfolio potentially leading to a higher education qualification at either post graduate (Masters) or under graduate level.

The project will bring expertise and experience to working in partnership with employers and sector representatives in the development and marketing of employer responsive courses. The position of CCE within the Business and Management School will also facilitate the mainstreaming of activities in a planned and systematic manner, whilst ensuring that progression pathways are established for participants from the outset. In turn, this will also help the project team assess the effectiveness of these strategies and build a long term strategy for demand-led curriculum of this kind.

Four areas for potential development have been identified:

  • Arts and cultural sector
  • Community and voluntary sector
  • Lifelong learning in a range of professional sectors including FE and the health sector
  • Masters level generic management skills in the private and public sectors.

CCE will also work to develop innovative methods of delivery including online and blended learning opportunities, delivery in the workplace, residential, intensive courses, and mentored learning in the workplace. The project will seek to explore the opportunities for APEL, the accreditation of existing workplace learning and the transfer of credit.
