Project update February 2010
At Northbrook we have been working on developing provision in the Health and Social Care sector as a pilot area for this project.
We have a two pronged approach; firstly through ‘stimulating latent demand’ by providing robust, sector specific, courses for employees in this field, and secondly through working closely with key employers and partners to identify and create programmes to meet specific training needs.
- Stimulating Latent Demand
- Meeting specific training needs
We will be running 4 modules from our foundation degree in health and social care throughout March and April.
These courses are aimed at employees who already have a level 3 NVQ and wish to continue with professional development that is accredited. We have also offered these courses to our NVQ assessors as part of their ongoing CPD programme in preparation for the Qualification Credit Framework. This would be useful CPD for other health and social care training providers also.
We are working with the Strategic Health Authority widening participation manager and The Skills Academy for Health to design and execute a 20 credit module in mentoring apprentices. This programme with be rolled out across Kent, Surrey and Sussex for 80 – 100 staff. This programme would also be useful for any company that is planning to recruit via the apprenticeship route and would like to ensure that workplace mentoring is secure.
Following a very successful NVQ delivery partnership with The Priory Group we are now working on designing and developing a range of modules for staff in specific and specialised fields and pathways within the organisation. This project is in collaboration with University of Brighton. We anticipate delivery will start in March with a module to introduce candidates to study at HE level.
We are planning to meet with other Strategic Health Authorities in the UK to discuss a standardised format for mentoring all apprentices in the NHS and hope to develop this further with them.
After cutting out teeth successfully in the Health and Social Care sector we will now expand this project into other areas, particularly music and theatre. I hope to have some exciting news here at the next update.
