Travel, Tourism & Retail
The Services Sector (Travel, Tourism, Retail and Hospitality) represents one of the largest groups of industries within both the UK and Sussex. In 2005 there were 182,343 hospitality establishments in the UK. (‘Skills Needs Assessment for the Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism sector’, final report January 2006, People 1st)
In recent years, the issues and challenges facing operators within these areas have increased in number and complexity, whilst simultaneously offering enormous potential for expansion. They include:
- increased regulation and accountability
- labour turnover in hospitality sector averages 30% at a cost of £886M environmental imperatives
- retail: supply chain management and social responsibility
- market domination and ‘corporate greed', death of the corner shop and increased specialisation
- equality of opportunity/management of diversity.
