Sussex Learning Network

bringing higher education within reach

Sport & Leisure

Sport and Leisure is a vibrant and growing field of employment and study. The successful bid to host the Olympic Games in London in 2012 has also added an extra impetus to the process of developing a skilled workforce in this area. Helping to ensure that Sussex can contribute to this process will be one of the central aims of the Sport and Leisure Curriculum Team.

Whilst the academic study of sport has expanded rapidly within higher education, the provision of higher vocational awards has arguably not kept pace with these developments. Likewise the Sport and Leisure sector is a complex area that covers a whole range of different skills, knowledge and employment opportunities.

Our focus is therefore on creating new programmes of study that provide greater opportunities for higher level achievement in vocational areas of study, as well as trying to promote and improve access to established courses. The active context of sport and leisure ideally lends itself to the vocational focus of the Sussex Learning Network. We hope that this curriculum area can make a real impact on promoting enhanced opportunities for vocational learners in Sussex.

You can see more details of our work in the Practioner Network Sport & Leisure update.
