SLN Team

Chris Baker - Director

Chris is responsible for giving overall leadership and direction to the Sussex Learning Network (SLN). He manages the delivery of the SLN aims and objectives, and is responsible for achieving the development of the SLN on a sustainable basis.

Chris has taught extensively in higher, further and adult education. Prior to taking up his present post he was the founding Director of the Centre for Widening Participation at The Open University. He has also worked as a policy analyst and for a new town development corporation. His main research interests include education policy, adult learning and organisational behaviour.

Sarah Hardman - Deputy Director

Sarah is responsible for planning student number allocation, financial planning and management. Her other main areas of responsibility are the development of the SLN Progression Accord and marketing.

Sarah was previously employed by Brighton & Hove City Council, where she managed the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme, which forms part of the government’s national agenda for regeneration and social inclusion. Prior to working in regeneration, Sarah’s background was in education and marketing, and she has experience of working in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Maureen Haywood - Staff Development Officer

Maureen leads the SLN programme of staff development, which includes the provision of online resources and co-ordination of regular events to support vocational teaching and learning, including the SLN annual conference. She is also responsible for leading the work of the Information Advice and Guidance team to develop and deliver online and paper IAG resources and associated staff development.

Maureen has worked in further, higher and adult education. Her teaching background includes supporting adults returning to learning, and staff development and training for education practitioners. Her most recent experience has been with The Open University where she was responsible for initiating and developing predominantly web-based learning support and staff development materials.

Peter Rainger - Information Officer

Peter was responsible for developing the SLN’s information and communication strategy, which includes providing project management for the development of our website and newsletter. He was responsible for collecting, analysing and producing material to update the network on changes to key indicators about employment and vocational learning in Sussex. He also coordinated the mapping of vocational learning provision across Sussex.

Peter's background includes learning technology, information management, disability support, e-learning accessibility, staff development, assistive technology and associated research. Peter has worked with FE, HE, the voluntary sector and industry through the JISC TechDis project and Key2Access Ltd.

Peter's work for the SLN is now complete and he has now moved on to a post at the University of Birmingham.

Rebecca Duffy - Network Manager

Rebecca's main areas of responsibility in the SLN Team are student engagement, managing the financial infrastructure of the SLN, supporting the web resource for the curriculum teams, and supporting the SLN administrative staff. She has an MA in Communication Studies from the University of Brighton and is also studying part-time for an MA in Creative Writing and Authorship at the University of Sussex.

Adam Stewart - Administrative Assistant

Adam is the first point of contact for the SLN and provides administrative support to the SLN Team. He works closely with the curriculum staff coordinating events and meetings.

Prior to his time at the SLN, Adam worked as a Rail Union Learning project worker, promoting learning opportunities among non-traditional learners.

Moira Monk - Staff Development Assistant

Moira is mainly responsible for the organisation of SLN staff development events and also supports the work of the information, advice and guidance officers.

She has been involved in both the private and public sectors and ran the Tennis Sussex office based in Brighton for 5 years. She has recently been involved in organising events for ‘Skills for Life’ also based at the Sussex Innovation Centre.
